Kiara Howell from Grassfield High School

Kiara Howell was named the 2012 Chesapeake female Athlete-of-the-Year. Kiara is a 2012 graduate of Grassfield High School and is currently attending the Norfolk State University on a Track & Field scholarship.

Kiara was 4 year letterman on the girls indoor and outdoor track team.

As a sophomore, Kiara was the Virginia AAA outdoor state runner-up in the discus and all-state in the shot put.

During her junior year, she won the Southeastern District and Regional indoor titles in the shot put. At the AAA state championship, she capped off the 2011 indoor season by winning the shot put state title. During 2011 outdoor spring season, Kiara captured district and regional titles in the shot put and discus. She then won the AAA state championship in the shot put and placed second in the discus competition.

As a senior, Kiara won the district, regional, and her second VA AAA indoor state title in the shot put. Kiara is the third ranked all-time Virginia high school thrower, and was ranked 3rd in the nation during the indoor track season. Last spring during the outdoor track campaign, Kiara again captured district and regional titles in the shot put and discus. She then won her second consecutive AAA state title in the shot put and her first state championship in the discus.

During her high school career, Kiara won a total of five Virginia AAA state track titles to go along with two runner-up finishes. Kiara is the most highly decorated high school thrower from Chesapeake Public Schools.

Kiara recently completed her first semester at the Norfolk State University, where she is majoring in Business. We wish Kiara the best of luck in her collegiate pursuit.
