Chesapeake Sports Club December 2024 Luncheon

Speaker: Bruce Rader, Award winning broadcaster, and
2020 Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

A native of Maryland, sports broadcaster Bruce Rader came to the Hampton Roads market in the mid 1970’s. In 1977 he joined WAVY-TV, and in 1979 was named Sports Director, a position he still holds. Serving the Southeastern Virginia market, Rader changed the landscape of sports coverage by putting the “local” back in local sports. Focusing on high school sports, Rader has spent the last four decades providing a platform for the athletes, coaches, and teams that call Hampton Roads home. Rader’s impact stretched to other underserved sports segments as well, becoming the first television broadcaster to provide regular coverage of the area’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities, even serving as host for the CIAA basketball tournament broadcasts.

He is a three-time world champion (2019 Doha, 2022 Eugene and 2023 Budapest), 2024 Paris Olympic gold medalist in the 110 meters hurdles and the second-fastest man in history at the event with a personal best of 12.81 seconds, set at the U.S. Olympic Trials on June 26, 2021. In the 60 meters hurdles, Holloway is the 2022 Belgrade and 2024 Glasgow World Indoor champion and the world indoor record holder with a time of 7.27 seconds set at the 2024 USA Track & Field Indoor Championships.
